Nathan and Haley
The Jamie Chronicles
Rating: PG
“Jamie!” His mother bellowed.
Boy was he in trouble. He didn’t mean to break it over, honest. Yes, he was mature for his age but when your mother tells you not to climb the cabinet there’s something that makes you want to do it more.
“James Lucas Scott, do not make me call you again!”
Oh no, full naming him, he was defiantly in trouble Jamie searched his brain for the worst word he knew.
“Oh fudge!” He said to himself and sulked down the stairs.
His mother was standing there with the broken china in both hands, she looked angry, he had vague memories of when he was little and he refused to stay in his cot, she’d ask him nicely, then say it firmly but even when she got mad because he crawled into their bed she would have a softness in her eyes even when her voice told a different story. Once his father even bribed him to stay in his cot, he only found it the more amusing but his mummy wasn’t smiling now.
He walked over to her dragging his feet along the floor.
“Did you do this?” She asked.
Mommy often did that it was what uncle Lucas called a rhetorical question. This was when someone asked a question but didn’t really want an answer because they already
knew it… or something like that.
Jamie shook his head fiercely.
“Then who did do it?” She said luring over him.
He gulped. He had to options apologize and promise he would tidy his room and eat those disgusting green vegetables or he could tell a white lie.
He shrugged his shoulders.
I guess he went with the second option.
“So this just decided to jump of the cabinet itself did it?”
There was one of those rhetorical questions again.
He didn’t like lying, he felt like he could feel his nose growing, you know…Pinocchio.
“Mama.” He said.
“Yes Jamie.” She said with the same angry tone.
“I climbed the cabinet and I lost my balance and I grabbed onto the hook thing and the vase
fell.” Jamie looked at her with his Bambi blue eyes trying to portray he was apologetic.
“You lost your balance?” She responded putting the broken china down on the table.
“Are you okay, did you hurt yourself baby?” She said cupping his face in her hands looking for a bruise.
There was that softness he always remembered.
“I’m sorry Mama” He said wrapping his arms around her neck.
“You’ve got to be careful Jamie, when I say don’t climb the cabinet I say it because I don’t want anything to happen to you. What would have happened if you did fall?” At that she held him tighter.
“Sorry Mama.” He said again. “Mama?” He said sniffing.
“What is it Jimmy Jam?” She said still holding him.
“What’s that smell?” He said innocently.
Haley got to her feet quickly, her eyes wide, “The soup. Oh crap!” She said running towards the kitchen.
Jamie smiled to himself. “Crap!” He said enthusiastically, he smiled and hurried up to his room.
New word, he thought.
More to come....
